Death toll reaches 76 in Congo rail disaster

The death toll in Monday's rail disaster in Congo-Brazzaville has risen to 76 according to the latest figure. It was earlier reported that more than 60 people had died in the crash.

The Deputy Head of the Chemin de fer Congo-ocean (CFCO) railway, Raoul Essou said there could be no exhaustive death toll until all the carriages had been cleared.

Meanwhile, the Congo-Brazzaville government said the search for more bodies would continue. The train derailed around 60 kilometres from the southern city of Pointe-Noire.

The head of CFCO, Joseph Sauveur El Bez, acknowledged that the high death toll was because of overloading of the train. The 510-kilometre CFCO line is the main link between the capital Brazzaville and Pointe Noire on the Atlantic.
