Death toll in yesterday's serial blasts in Baghdad goes upto 60

In Iraq, casualties from five blasts that ripped through Baghdad yesterday, rose to 60 deaths and 180 others wounded. According to Voice of Iraq news agency, Baghdad had been hit by a series of attacks with car bombs and improvised explosive devices, which targeted four mosques and an outdoor market in different areas. Voice of Iraq news agency quoting security sources reports that death toll in the eastern Baghdad district of Sadr City alone reached 39 while the 56 wounded in blast while blasts in al-Amin area left eight killed and 23 wounded. Earlier in a separate incident in eastern Ramadi of Anbar province yesterday, at least nine people were killed and ten others were wounded in blasts near three houses. The bombs were placed near the houses of a judge and police officers. Meanwhile Iraqi President Jalal Talabani has urged political powers to unify ranks and political discourse in the face of terrorism while Vice President Adel Abdulmahdi called for speeding up the formation of a national partnership government. Prime Minister Nouri al-Maliki lashed out at the bombers in a statement, saying the insurgents were trying to fight back after Iraqi security forces killed the two al-Qaida in Iraq leaders on 18 April. He also called on Iraqis to stand firm against Baathists.
