Death toll in flooded Chinese coal mine rises to 17

In China, the death toll in the flooded Wangjialing Coal Mine in north Shanxi Province has risen to 17, while another 21 trapped miners were still missing. The rescue headquarters said three more bodies were recovered this afternoon after two were found in the morning. Rescuers believed the disused mine full of water had caused the initial flood when broken into by workers. A total of 261 miners were working below ground when the mine flooded on March 28. Altogether 108 miners escaped unharmed while 153 were trapped underground. On Monday, 115 miners were brought out of the mine alive after being trapped for more than a week.
