Death toll in flood affected K'taka, A P & M'rashtra 230

Heavy rain and rampaging flood have wreaked havoc in Karnataka, Andhra Pradesh, Maharashtra claiming 230 lives and displacing lakhs in the past one week.<br/><br/>Karnataka accounted for 168 fatalities, Andhra Pradesh 37 and Maharashtra 25 as heavy downpour ravaged the three states flattening over two lakh homes, extensively damaging crops and uprooting lakhs of people.<br/><br/>Relief operations continued on a war-footing to provide succor to the marooned in the three states.Centre has rushed another contingent of trained personnel and motorised boats to intensify rescue operations in parts of Karnataka and Andhra Pradesh.<br/><br/>Respite from rain and receding flood in the northern district of Karnataka and return of sun-shine in various places has helped move of stranded people to safer locations. Union Home Minister Chidambaram and AICC President Sonia Gandhi are visiting flood affected areas in Andhra Pradesh and Karnataka on Monday. AIR correspondent reports the Chief Minister of Karnataka and his Cabinet colleagues are likely to meet them and submit a memorandum to seek relief fund for the State.<br/><br/>In Andhra Pradesh, the unprecedented floods have caused devastation in Kurnool Mahaboobnagar, Krishna and Guntur districts killing 38 people so far. While floodwaters are slowly receding in Kurnool and Mahaboobnagar districts, the situation is still grim in Krishna, Guntur and Nalgonda districts as the floodwater enter into about 200 more villages since Sunday evening.<br/><br/>Heavy inflows into Nagarjuna Sagar Reservoir and Prakasam barrage are posing exceptional threat to Vijayawada city and about a thousand villages that are on the banks of the river. Meanwhile, massive relief operations are underway in Kurnool and Mahaboobnagar districts where floodwaters started receding.<br/><br/>The entire administration has swung into relief operations. Chief Minister K. Rosaiah has carried out an aerial survey accompanied by Revenue Minister D. Prasada Rao in the flood hit areas.<br/><br/>Torrential rains in the past three days claimed 25 lives in Maharashtra. Chief Secretary Johny Joseph said in Mumbai that the state government announced compensation of one lakh rupees to each bereaved family.<br/><br/>In Gujarat, 11 persons died in rain related incidents yesterday. Rain accompanied by high velocity wind lashed several parts of Saurashtra on Sunday night.
