Death toll in Chhattisgarh Naxal attack rises to 28

In Chhattisgarh, the death toll in the naxal attack has gone upto 28 with the recovery of 11 bodies this morning. These include the bodies of State Congress chief Nand Kumar Patel and his son, who were kidnapped by the ultras.

Twenty five others including former Union Minister VC Shukla have been injured in the incident which took place near Jagdalpur. Mr. Shukla who was critically injured has been brought to Delhi and admitted to Medanta City hospital in Gurgaon for treatment.

A medical bulletin issued by the hospital says, Mr. Shukla's condition still remains critical. A multi deciplenary team of doctors are attending Mr. Shukla. Delhi Chief Minister Sheila Dixit visited the hospital and enquired about his health.

Chhattisgarh Chief Minister Raman Singh who reached Jagdalpur this morning, has ordered a judicial inquiry into the incident. The Chhattisgarh Government has declared a three day State mourning over the incident.

Immediately on their arrival in Raipur, Prime Minister Dr. Manmohan Singh and Congress President Mrs. Sonia Gandhi visited the seriousy injured people at the hospital. Later they went to Congress Bhawan and addressed the Party workers.

Appreciating the courage and bravery of the Congress leaders in Chhattisgarh, Mrs. Sonia Gandhi said, you all know that the history of Congress is evident of the fact that it has faced challenges and given sacrifices.

She said, this attack is not on the Congress party or its leaders. It is an attck on the whole democratic values.
