In Brazil, at least 200 people have been buried in a mudslide that hit Niteroi last night. Local Civil Defense subsecretary Pedro Machado today said the mudslide plowed into a slum in Niteroi and most likely killed the victims instantly.

Niteroi lies across the bay from the state capital and is part of the greater Rio de Janeiro metropolitan area. Record rain has been pouring in the Rio region since Monday, triggering constant mudslides.

The official death toll in floods and landslides now stands at 153 but was feared to rise sharply after last night's mudslide. Brazil's southeastern region has been battered by the heaviest rain and floods in almost half a century.
