Death toll in Bihar boat tragedy rises to 36

In Bihar, death toll has increased to 36 in the boat tragedy in Buxar district. The Director General of Police of the state Neelmani told AIR that bodies of 25 women and 11 male have been recovered so far recovered. Over 25 people are still missing after an overcrowded country-boat sank in river Ganga in Buxar district. The ill-fated boat was carrying about 80 passengers when the tragedy happened. Nineteen people swam to safety. The boat was going to Dalupur from Ballia in Uttar Pradesh when it got caught in a whirlpool in Ganga and capsized near Brahmpur police station area of Buxar district. AIR Patna correspondent reports that NDRF team has been engaged in relief and rescue operations.Missing bodies are being searched out with the help of local divers.Meanwhile, Chief Minister Nitish Kumar has ordered a magisterial probe into the incident and directed state disaster management authorities to intensify rescue operation.The Chief Minister has announced an exgratia payment of Rs. one lakh to the kin of each of the deceased. District Magistrate and Superintendent of Police are camping at the spot to oversee the rescue work.AIR correspondent K.K. Lal reports from Patna that an overcrowded country boat capsized in midstream of the river Ganga when it got in whirlpool. The ill fated boat was carrying about eighty labourers who were returning from Diera area to their home.Most of the casualities are women and children. NDRF team is engaged in relief and rescue operations. Missing bodies are being searched out with the help of local divers.
