Death toll in AP train accident mounts to 25, inquiry ordered

The Railway Minister Mr. Mukul Roy has ordered an inquiry into the Hampi Express train accident. Commissioner Railway Safety, S K Mittal will conduct a statutory inquiry and has been asked to submit a report at the earliest.

The death toll rose to 25 in the accident which took place in the wee hours today at Penukonda in Ananthpur district of Andhra Pradesh. According to railway authorities, 13 charred bodies were recovered from the sleeper coach next to engine while 9 bodies were taken out from general coach. Three more persons succumbed to injuries in hospital. 36 more passengers who injured are being treated at various hospitals at Penukonda, Hindupur, Puttaparthi and Bangalore. The Hampi Express train travelling from Hubli to Bangalore rammed into a stationary goods train at Penukonda Railway station.
