Death toll in AP train accident mounts to 22

The death toll rose to 22 in the Humpi Express accident took place in the wee hours today at Penukonda in Ananthpur district of Andhra Pradesh. According to railway authorities, 13 charred bodies were recovered from the sleeper coach next to engine while 8 bodies were taken out from general coach.

One person succumbed to injuries in Pavugada hospital in Karnataka. 36 more passengers are being treated at various hospitals at Penukonda, Hindupur, Puttaparthi and Bangalore . The Humpi Express train travelling from Hubli to Bangalore rammed into a stationary goods train at Penukonda Railway station.

The Railway Minister Mr. Mukul Roy has ordered an inquiry into the accident. Commissioner Railway Safety, S K Mittal will conduct a statutory inquiry and has been asked to submit a report at the earliest.
