In China, the death toll due to Typhoon Merandi, world's strongest typhoon this year, has risen to 14. More than a dozen people are also missing. The typhoon had hit the southern part of Taiwan on Wednesday and, the next day, slammed into the southeastern part of China with strong winds and lashing rains. Nearly 2 million homes were powerless in Fujian. The typhoon also brought heavy rainfall as it moved to lash Zhejiang Province. More than 63,000 people in Zhejiang were relocated.<br/><br/>Merandi pushed inland and up toward Shanghai Friday, with heavy rain, but will continue to lose strength on the way.<br/><br/>Meanwhile, Chinese marine forecasting authorities has upgraded the warning for storms to orange as Typhoon Malakas. China's National Marine Environmental Forecasting Center said in a statement that Malakas, the 16th typhoon this year, will hit the coasts of Zhejiang and Fujian provinces tonight.
