Death toll due to rains in Andhra rises to 16

In Andhra Pradesh, the number of persons died due to incessant rain rose to 16. Heavy rains lashed the coastal districts of the state for the past three days under the influence of a depression in the Bay of Bengal causing severe losses. According to State Relief Commission, 12 persons were killed in Guntur district, two in Nellore and one each in Prakasam and East Godavari districts. Four more persons are reported missing. Meanwhile, Chief Minister K Niran Kumar Reddy has undertaken an aerial survey to assess the loss and monitor relief works. AIR correspondent M.S. Lakshmi reports from Hyderabad that the incessant rains that have lashed the coastal districts of the state for the past three-four days have caused severe loses once again. The state has not yet come out of the heavy losses that it had already suffered last month due to Jal Cyclone and unusual heavy rains due to continuous depressions in the Bay of Bengal last month. While the Godavari districts, the rice bowl of the state had suffered heavy crop losses last month, it is the turn of Krishna and Guntur districts this time. The standing crop, most of it paddy, in over 5 lakh 50 thousand hectare in East and West Godavari, Krishna, Guntur, Prakasam and Nellore districts was damaged due to the recent heavy rains. Horticulture crops in nearly thousand hectares were suffered damages. About 900 houses were also damaged. Chief Minister N Kiran Kumar Reddy has undertaken an aerial survey in the rain affected districts today to assess the losses and monitor the relief works.
