In UP, the death toll due to brain fever has mounted to 370 as seven children have succumbed to the disease during past thirty six hours in BRD Medical College Hospital of Gorakhpur. Quoting official sources, our Gorakhpur correspondent reports that 23 patients suffering from brain fever were admitted to the hospital yesterday. AIR correspondent adds that the gram pradhans have been directed to launch massive sanitation programme in the affected villages.’The village heads of the affected areas have been asked to launch sanitation drive from their own resources. The voluntary agencies are also involved in campaigns of sanitation and safe drinking water. The vector-borne disease mainly spreads due to mosquitoes and filthy water. Meanwhile, the National Commission for Protection of Child Rights yesterday summoned Principal Secretary Health and other senior officials of the state to explain the steps taken by them to curb the disease. They have been asked to carry out concerted efforts to curb the disease.
