Death toll climbs to five in Handwara firing incident

In Jammu & Kashmir, the death toll reached five in Tuesday's firing incident in north Kashmir's Handwara town of Kupwara district. A teenager Arif Hussain Dar of Awura village of Kupwara succumbed to his injuries. Dar was wounded along with three other civilians in alleged army firing on protesters in Natnusa village of Kupwara district today afternoon.<br/><br/>The normal life in Kashmir Valley remained affected since Tuesday against the killing of three youths and an aged woman in alleged firing and shelling by security forces in Handwara town of Kupwara district. Besides Handwara and other Kupwara areas, the sensitive areas in Srinagar district witnessed stringent restrictions for the third day today. <br/><br/>Shops, business establishments and private institutions remained closed for the fourth consecutive day. Public transport remained off the roads. However, the sparse private transport was plying in capital city. <br/><br/>Defence Minister Manohar Parrikar has assured the J&K CM Mehbooba Mufti of a detailed time-bound probe to fix the responsibility in the firing incident at Handwara. The Northern Army Commander Lt Gen DS Hooda asked for an early completion of the Handwara enquiry that has been already ordered.<br/>Meanwhile, separatist leaders remained either under house arrest or under preventive custody in various police stations. <br/><br/>Mirwaiz Umar Farooq was disallowed to lead protest rally against the killings. Meanwhile, the preventive police custody of teenager Handwara girl is becoming controversial as the separatists and rights groups have raised questions over the legal custody of the girl and the authenticity of her video statement. <br/><br/>The video was released by the security forces after Tuesday's incident. Police said the girl has been kept in preventive custody and family approached Police for protection. The family has denied the police claim. <br/><br/>JKLF, Hurriyat Geelani and Hurriyat Mirwaiz have called for Kashmir wide shutdown tomorrow. It is a tough situation for Chief Minister Mehbooba Mufti she faces at the outset of her tenure. Her main plank has been dignity and security of people.
