Death toll climbs to 117 in Bangladesh fire

The death toll in the deadly fire accident at Nimtoli in Old Dhaka area of Bangladesh has gone up to 117. According to the Dhaka District Commissioner, 102 bodies have been handed over to the relatives so far while 15 bodies remain to be identified. Fresh teams of fire fighters have been deployed in the afternoon to look for bodies in the charred remains of the bulding. The Bangladesh government has announced that it will be a day of national mourning on Saturday across the country. Bangladesh President Zillur Rahman has expressed his profound shock at the loss of life in the fire. Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina visited the injured people being treated at the Dhaka Medical College Hospital in the morning and directed the authorities concerned to ensure proper treatment.She also announced that the government will bear the cost of the treatment of the injured and take steps for rehabilitation of the people affected in the fire accident. With more than 100 people injured seriously, army doctors have joined in to help treating them at the Dhaka medical college hospital while some seriously injured people have also been shifted to the Cantonment hospital . The Bangladesh government has constituted a three-member enquiry committee, headed by an additional secretary of the Home Ministry to investigate the incident. The fire reportedly broke out following a tansformer blast which later spread to several buildings in the area.<br/>
