The death toll in the deadly fire accident at Nimtoli in Old Dhaka area of Bangladesh has gone up to 109. The Bangladesh government has announced that it will be a day of national mourning on Saturday across the country while special prayers are being offered today at mosques, temples, churches and pagodas for those who lost their lives in the devastating fire. Bangladesh President Zillur Rahman has expressed his profound shock at the loss of life in the fire. Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina visited the injured people being treated at the Dhaka Medical College Hospital in the morning and directed the authorities concerned to ensure proper treatment. She also announced that the government will bear the cost of the treatment of the injured and take steps for rehabilitation of the people affected in the fire accident. Though the rescue operations were called off in the morning more than 100 police and fire personnel were reported to be on the spot till noon to aid in recovery of dead bodies. According to the Dhaka Metropolitan Police officials more than 100 persons who are critically injured are being treated at the Dhaka medical college hospital. The Bangladesh government has constituted a three-member enquiry committee, headed by an additional secretary of the Home Ministry to investigate the incident. The fire reportedly broke out following a transformer blast which later spread to several buildings in the area.
