The Supreme Court has said that death sentence should be awarded in dowry death and bride burning cases as they fall under the “rarest of rare” category. A bench comprising Justices Markandeya Katju and Gyan Sudha Mishra said that the time has come to stamp out the evil of bride killing with an iron hand so that it acts as a deterrent. The apex court passed the order while upholding the life sentence imposed on Satyanarayan Tiwari and his mother for strangulating and setting ablaze the former's wife Geeta in pursuit of their demand for dowry in Uttar Pradesh on 3rd November 2000.
