Deadlock continues in Parliament over conversion, black money issues

The issues of religious conversion and black money rocked the Lok Sabha and the Rajya Sabha today with opposition parties protesting inside and outside Parliament. RSS chief Mohan Bhagwat's justification on conversion also agitated the opposition. The Rajya Sabha could not transact any legislative business for the sixth day, today as the deadlock between government and opposition continued on Prime Minister Narendra Modi's statement on conversion besides black money.

The House witnessed repeated adjournments since it met for the day.
Raising the issues, Sharad Yadav of the JD(U) charged the government with encouraging religious conversions in the name of Ghar Wapsi. He was supported by CPI(M),Samajwadi Party, Congress and Trinamool Congress. Responding to the allegations, Leader of the House in the Rajya Sabha Arun Jaitley said that the discussion on the issue has already been taken up and the government is ready to discuss any other issue if the opposition wants.

The issues also figured in the Lok Sabha where opposition members demanded Mr. Modi's statement over the conversion. Replying to it, Parliamentary Affairs Minister M Venkaiah Naidu said, choosing religion is voluntary and government has no role in in it.
Earlier, the House witnessed repeated adjournment during post lunch session and when it reassembled at 4 pm, Mr. Mallikarjun Kharge of Congress again pressed for Prime Minister’s statement on conversion.

Not satisfied with government response, several opposition members trooped into the well and later staged a walkout. A report:
Rejecting government's proposal for a law against conversion, Congress spokesperson Randeep Singh Surjewala said that freedom to religion is provided by the Constitution which can not be tinkered with.

Criticizing Mr. Bhagwat for justifying conversion, CPI leader D. Raja termed his remarks as unconstitutional and unacceptable. BSP Chief Ms Mayawati said Mr Bhagwat is not aware of country’s Constitution otherwise he should not have made such a statement.
With just one day left for the Winter session to conclude, the row over religious conversion seems to have blocked the passage of important bills including insurance, the Coal Mines ( Special Provisions) and Delhi (Special Laws) Bills.
