In Nepal, the political deadlock in selecting a consensus candidate as Prime Minister to lead the government continues even as the deadline ends on Wednesday evening. The President had extended the deadline by three days on Sunday as requested by the political parties. The UCPN (Maoist) who has fielded party Vice Chairman Baburam Bhattari as their candidate to lead the consensus government has said that they should lead the government as the peace process would move forward under their leadership. The Maoist are also the largest party in the Constituent Assembly. The Nepali Congress has stuck to their stand that they would not accept the Maoist leadership unless they are detached from the weapons and combatants. All the parties have said there is a need for a consensus government but they have yet to come to an understanding on selecting a consensus candidate for leading the government. There will be voting in the Constituent Assembly for a majority government if parties fail to meet the deadline by Wednesday evening.
