DBT scheme to be fully rolled out in the country by December, says P. Chidambaram

Finance Minister P Chidambaram says, Direct Benefit Transfer, DBT, scheme will be fully rolled out in the country by December this year. In an exclusive interview to Prasar Bharti, the Minister said the succesful implementation of the scheme will eliminate irregularities and leakages. It will also reduce delays in delivery of entitlements. Chidamabaram said the scheme has been nearly cent percent satisfactory.

Stating that the AADHAAR platform must be the only channel for the payments, Chidambarm asked all public sector banks to approach directly to the beneficiaries for linking AADHAAR number with their bank accounts. He said, district collectors have been asked to expeditiously ensure digitization of beneficiaries' list and help open bank accounts.

The Finance Minister said LPG roll out will be the biggest test for DBT and it will eliminate dupilcity in accounts. The aim of DBT is to make payments in accounts. Zero complaints, no corrution and no delay are its aim. Chidambaram said MGNREGA will also be brought under the ambit of DBT scheme, initially as a pilot project.
