DBT for LPG Scheme to be extended to half the country by Jan 2014

Direct Benefit Transfer,DBT, for LPG is being extended to 289 districts, covering almost half of the country by January next year.

The government today said 480 crore rupees have been transferred into about ninety lakh accounts so far under the , DBT,started on 1st of January this year. The bulk of the funds totalling 271 crore rupees were provided to sixty lakh fifty thousand LPG consumers through the Aadhaar-enabled platform by oil companies between June and August.

Mission Director DBT S Sundareshan told reporters in New Delhi that the programme has been launched in as many as 28 schemes in 121 districts. He said DBT for LPG is being extended to 289 districts, covering almost half of the country by January next year.

Under the scheme, cash subsidy will be transferred directly to the bank accounts of LPG customers. The scheme provides for depositing 435 rupees in bank accounts of every household of LPG consumers in advance to purchase a 14.2-kg LPG cylinder at market price. In all, cash subsidy will be admissible for nine refills in a year.
