Former Union minister Dayanidhi Maran appeared before a CBI court in Chennai on Friday in the illegal telephone exchange case. <br/><br/>He, along with his brother and Sun TV group chairman Kalanidhi Maran and others named in the case were summoned by the Fourteenth Special CBI Court for framing charges against them. Mr Kalanidhi Maran moved an application seeking to dispense with his appearance citing health reasons. A separate application by the Maran brothers demanded twenty documents provided by the CBI in legible formats, saying they were not readable. <br/><br/>Accepting the demand, the judge Mr Natarajan posted the case for further hearing to the 11th of next month.<br/>The CBI in the chargesheet has said, during his tenure as the Union communication and information technology minister from 2004 to 2006, Mr Dayanidhi Maran misused his office for the business interests of Sun TV group owned by his family members. <br/><br/>It says, he installed a private telephone exchange at his residences in Chennai for use by the media house. The CBI has estimated the loss to the exchequer as 1.78 crore rupees. Former BSNL general manager K Brahmnathan, former deputy general manager M P Velusamy and Dayanidhi Maran's private secretary Gauthaman are some of the others included as accused in the case.
