Davis Cup Tennis World Group Play Offs, India level with Canada 1-1

In Davis Cup Tennis World Group Play Offs being played at Edmonton in Canada, India and Canada are level with one victory each at the end of day one. India's Yuki Bhambri lost to world number 51 Denis Shapovalov in the second single match. Ramkumar Ramanathan fetched the crucial win but Yuki Bhambri made the day memorable even in defeat as both the countries shared the honours. Yuki turned the match on its head after being down by two sets and a match point in the third set but eventually lost 6-7(2) 4-6 7-6(6) 6-4 1-6 to Denis Shapovalov after an audacious performance in a three hours and 52 minutes battle. The Delhi youngster played with a lot of maturity and showed he has toughened up mentally as he hardly showed nervesdespite trailing by two sets. Earlier, Ramkumar Ramanathan, ranked 154, defeated debutant Brayden Schnur in a marathon four setter. Ramkumar, ranked 154th, tamed the debutant 5-7 7-6 (4) 7-5 7-5 in the first singles, which was also a marathon match lasting three hours and 16 minutes. The Chennai lad thus remained unbeaten in the Davis Cup in 2017 season, having won all five matches he has played. Indian team is making its fourth straight attempt to make it to the elite 16-nation World Group, having lost in the last three years to Serbia in 2014, Czech Republic in 2015 and Spain in 2016 in the Play-offs.
