India take on New Zealand in the Davis Cup Asia Oceania Group I tie, at Christ Church from tomorrow. The winner will advance to the World Group play-offs and India will certainly start as favourites in the second round tie against the Kiwis. The Indian team looks much stronger with its star players Somdev Dev Varman, Uki Bhambari and Rohan Bopanna who are ahead in world rankings as compared to the local players. The fourth player is Saket Mineni. However, the cold temperature of New Zealand may go against their temperament as Indian players are not used to playing in such harsh conditions. Besides, Jose Stathem is New Zealand strongest player which may bolster their spirits. India have a better record against New Zealand. During the last encounter between the two teams at Chandigarh India had registered a five nil victory over the rivals. Overall India have defeated New Zealand in the last four consecuted engagements. The only string of defeats they tasted at the hands of New Zealand was in the 1970s when they were defeated thrice. The world group play offs will be staged in September this year.
