Davis Cup: India suffers early set back

It was a disappointing start to India's Davis Cup campaign today as Ranjeet Virali Murugesan was hammered in the first singles while Vijayant Malik conceded the second due to severe cramps in his leg. This helped South Korea take a 2-0 lead in the Group I Asia/Oceania first round tie in New Delhi. India is fielding a weakened team for this tie, due to a combination of injuries and player disputes. Ranjeet, who is India's No.1 player for the tie, was thrashed 1-6, 0-6, 1-6 by the unranked Min-Hyeok Cho. After a humiliating loss in the first singles, Vijayant Malik gave spirited performance against Suk-Young Jeong. But in the third set, with the score at 4-6, 5-7, 0-2, he felt excruciating pain in his left leg and collapsed on the court and conceded the match. India's veteran doubles star Leander Paes will be in action in tomorrow's doubles alongside Purav Raja when they take on Ji-Sung Nam and Yong-Kyu Lim.In Asia/Oceania Zone Group II matches, New Zealand's No. King Turner overran Lebanon 's Michael Massih 6-1, 6-1, 6-0 to get his team's first point on board in the first round tie in Auckland. New Zealand is now 2-0 on visitors Lebanon after comprehensive wins for Daniel King Turner and Artem Sitak on day one. In Colombo, Aqeel Khan put Pakistan 1-0 up after his opponent, Dineshkanthan Thangararajah retired hurt with full body cramps when the scoreline stood at 6-4, 1-6, 4-2. Australia ran out to a 2-0 lead with wins in both singles rubbers of the day in Kaohsiung City, Chinese Taipei. Matthew Ebden picked up his team's second point of the day with a 6-3, 6-4, 7-5 win over Ti Chen. Lieyton Hewitt had earlier delivered an efficient 6-4, 6-4, 6-4 win over Tsung-Hua Yang. Japan leads Indonesia 2-0 after emphatic wins for Tatsuma Ito and Go Soeda on day one in Tokyo. Ito notched up an impressive 6-2, 6-2, 6-4 victory over Indonesia's No.1 Christopher Rungkat before Soeda dispatched Wisnu-Adi Nugroho 6-0, 6-0, 6-1 for the loss of just one game. Today's wins reinforce Japan's status as heavy favourites in this first round tie. John Isner will play the No.1 singles spot for the U.S.team against Brazil in the first round of Davis Cup World Group matches.
