In Uttar Pradesh leading Islamic seminary Darul Uloom Deoband in Saharanpur has issued fatwa decree on working Muslim women saying it illegal according to the Shariah law.

Our Lucknow correspondent reports that the fatwa has come in response to a query whether income of a Muslim woman for a family was justified. The fatwa was issued by a bench of three clerics including chief mufti Habib-ur-Rehman which was made public today.

The fatwa has said that it is unlawful for Muslim women to work in the government or private sector where men and women work together and women have to talk with men frankly and without a veil.

However, this fatwa has drawn flak among other clerics. Mufti Maulana Khalid Rasheed Firangi Meheli has said the fatwa of Deoband is a retrograde restriction on Muslim women.

The Naib Imam of Lucknow’s main Eidgah Mosque at Aishbagh has said that Men and women in Shariyat are entitled to equal rights. He has said that if men follow the Shariyat, there is no reason why women can’t work with them.
