In West Bengal, the death toll in last night’s suspension bridge collapsed at Bijanbari under Darjeeling sadar sub division in the district rose to 34. Over 120 injured in the incidents have been admitted in Bijanbari, Darjeeling sadar hospital and in North Bengal medical College and hospital in Siliguri. According to Sub Divisional officer Darjeeling Sadar Sub division Mr. Tamal Das the last minute search and rescue operation with the help of Army police and some other organisations is on since this morning. Rescue operation was carried the whole night. He however said that there is no report of any missing person in the incident. West Bengal Chief Minister Mamta Banerjee has expressed shock over the accident and said the state government will bear the treatment cost of the injured. She will be visiting the accident site and the hospitals where the injured are undergoing treatment today. Union Ministers Dinesh Trivedi and Sudip Bandopadhaya will accompany her. AIR correspondent reports that a suspension bridge packed with a festival crowed caved at Bijanbari about 40 Km from Darjeeling last night killing 30 people on the spot and injuring large numbers. The bridge over little Rangeet river connected Bijanbari and Chungthung by Zilla parishad in 1972. There was big crowed who had gathered to witness cultural programme, Diwali festival mela and foundation ceremony of Bijanbari .degree college building at new place in the area. Meanwhile the state Chief minister Ms Mamata Banerjee has asked North Bengal development Minister Gautam Dev and Siliguri MLA Dr. Rudranath Bhattacharjee to rush to Darjeelng immediately.
