Dantewada Naxal attack: Chidambaram offers resignation, PM rejects it

Home Minister P Chidambaram has offered to resign in the wake of the Dantewada Naxal attack in Chhtisgarh. Accordong to PMO sources the Prime Minister, Dr Manmohan Singh has rejected it.<br/><br/>Taking full responsibility, Mr Chidambaram said this morning that the buck stopped at his desk with regard to the Tuesday's Naxal attack. <br/><br/>Mr Chidambaram said, a day after the massacre, he had given it in writing to Prime Minister that he accepts full responsibility for the attack. <br/><br/>Addressing the 'Shourya Diwas' (valour day) of CRPF, the Home Minister lauded the sacrifices of the paramilitary force and said the government is trying to ensure that personnel from it were well-paid, well-housed and well-equipped. He also said his Ministry will ensure that the families of slain jawans receive compensation by the end of this month and one member from each of them gets a job.<br/><br/>In a related development , Army chief General V K Singh said that there were internal deficiencies in the way the CRPF carried out the Dantewada operation. Talking to reporters he said, the battalion involved was not trained by the army.<br/><br/>On the other hand, Chhattisgarh Chief Minister Raman Singh said the option of talks with Naxals should remain open but wondered how long can the Centre and state governments could wait for the parleys to begin with the ultras. Mr Singh said a probe has been ordered into the massacre and it would shed light on what went wrong. <br/><br/>The West Bengal Chief Minister Mr.Buddhadeb Bhattacharjee has called for revamping the plans and operations against Naxalists. He was speaking to reporters in New Delhi today. <br/><br/>The statement assumes significance in the wake of latest attack on a CRPF camp by Naxalists in Dantewara District of Chhatisgarh. He said his government will set up 28 new police stations in West Bengal to counter Naxalites. He charged Trinimool Congress with having links with the Moists in West Bengal.
