Dalai Lama accuses China of annihilating Buddhism in Tibet

Tibetan spiritual leader the Dalai Lama today accused China of trying to deliberately annihilate Buddhism in Tibet by conducting a campaign of patriotic re-education in monasteries there.

In a statement issued at Dharamsala on the 51st anniversary of the Tibetans' National Uprising Day, he said, Chinese authorities are putting the monks and nuns in prison-like conditions depriving them the opportunity to study and practise in peace.

He said, these conditions make the monasteries function more like museums and are intended to deliberately annihilate buddhism. Alleging that there was no positive response from Chinese authorities on Tibet's autonomy issue, the Dalai Lama said, his stand to continue with the dialogue remains unchanged.
