Cyclonic weather condition continues in Andamans

With the cyclonic weather condition persisting in the Andaman and Nicobar Islands, over 800 tourists remained stranded in two islands today. Naval ships deployed for evacuation were unable to enter the harbour due to strong winds. There were, however, no reports of any casualty from either Havelock or Neil islands hit by the cyclonic weather since Monday. The rains have stopped since morning but the wind is still blowing hard.

Talking to AIR, the Lt. Governor of Andaman and Nicobar Islands Dr Jagdish Mukhi said, though the weather is rough, there is no need to panic. Union Home Minister Rajnath Singh spoke to the Lt. Governor today and took stock of the situation in the Havelock Islands. In a series of tweets, Mr Singh said, the tourists are safe and the government has made all preparations to evacuate them.

He appealed to the family of the tourists not to panic. The Home Minister said, the government will launch rescue operations immediately after the intensity of the cyclone reduces. Heavy rain and winds triggered by a tropical storm are pounding the group of islands for the past few days, severely affecting travel to the mainland.
