Cyclone Vardah: Central team to visit Tamil Nadu to assess the damage

The Inter-Ministerial team, deputed by the Centre to assess the damage caused by Cyclone Vardah in Tamil Nadu, will reach Chennai later this evening. The nine member team led by Union Home Ministry Joint Secretary Praveen Vashishta is drawn from the Ministries of Finance, Agriculture, Water Resources, Health, Power, Highways and Rural Development. <br/><br/> The team members are expected to be briefed about the devastations wreaked by Cyclone Vardah in the northern districts, especially Chennai, Tiruvallur and Kanchipuram districts. They are scheduled to make their field visits from tomorrow.<br/><br/>The Central Team is scheduled to make on the spot assessments of the damages due to the fury of the cyclone on the 12th of this month while crossing the coast. <br/><br/>Since the basic infrastructural facilities have been restored after relief works, the officials are planning to show the footages of the devastating effect of the nature's fury in the northern districts of the State to substantiate the state government's own assessment of Rs 22573 crore damages.<br/><br/> The State has demanded Rs 1000 crore central fund for immediate relief works. The central team after making the on the spot studies for about three days, is to submit its report.

The Inter-Ministerial team, deputed by the Centre to assess the damage caused by Cyclone Vardah in Tamil Nadu, is reaching Chennai today. An official release said, Joint Secretary in the Home Ministry, Praveen Vashista will lead the 9-member team which also includes members of Departments of Finance, Agriculture, Health, Rural Development and Road Transport. <br/><br/>The team is scheduled to hold consultations with Chief Minister O. Panneerselvam, before undertaking visits of the affected parts in Chennai, Kancheepuram and Tiruvallore. It will assess the damage caused to Agriculture, Industries, Infrastructure and other sectors, and submit its report to the Centre.<br/><br/>The Tamil Nadu Chief Minister had, earlier this month, met Prime Minister Narendra Modi in Delhi and submitted a memorandum, pegging the estimated funds requirement for reconstruction and restoration works at around 22,500 crore rupees. He had also sought an immediate assistance of 1,000 crores.
