Cyclone 'Roanu' moving towards Bangladesh; Coastal AP, Odisha brace for heavy rains

The cyclonic storm 'ROANU' over northwest and adjoining west-central Bay of Bengal moved east-northeastwards and lay centred at about 160km east of Paradip in Odisha and 435 km southwest of Chittagong in Bangladesh over northwest Bay of Bengal. The system is likely to move east-northeastwards and cross south Bangladesh coast between Khepupara and Cox's Bazar, close to Chittagong in the evening of 21st May, as a cyclonic storm.<br/><br/>Under its influence rainfall is very likely at most places with heavy to very heavy falls at a few places and isolated extremely heavy falls over coastal Odisha during next 24 hours and over Gangetic West Bengal during next 36 hours. Rainfall is also very likely at most places with heavy to very heavy falls at a few places and isolated extremely heavy falls over Mizoram and isolated heavy to very heavy falls over south Assam, Manipur and Tripura during next 36 hours.<br/><br/>Wind speed reaching 80-90 kmph gusting to 100 kmph is very likely to prevail along and off Odisha-West Bengal coast during next 24 hours. Strong surface winds speed reaching 45-50 kmph likely along and off coastal Andhra Pradesh. Fishermen are advised not to venture into sea along and off North Coastal Andhra Pradesh, Odisha and West Bengal coast during next 36 hours, while fishermen are advised to be cautious while venturing into sea along and off South Coastal Andhra Pradesh.<br/><br/>A de-warning message was issued by the Cyclone Warning Centre, Visakhapatnam last night by replacing Local Cautionary signals in all major ports in Andhra Pradesh with Distant Warning No.2 as cyclone threat has gone.

The cyclonic storm 'ROANU' over west central and adjoining northwest Bay of Bengal moved northeastwards and lay centered at about 105 km east-northeast of Kalingapatnam of Andhra Pradesh, 50 km south-southeast of Gopalpur, 240 km west-southwest of Paradip in Odisha and 800 km west-southwest of Chittagong in Bangladesh. <br/><br/>The system is likely to move northeastwards along and off Andhra Pradesh and Odisha coasts and intensify into a severe cyclonic storm during next 24 hours. The system is moving at a speed of 20 kmph, away from the Andhra Pradesh coast towards Bangladesh and is expected to cross south Bangladesh coast between Khepupara and Cox's Bazar, close to Chittagong in the evening of 21st May, as a cyclonic storm.<br/><br/>The Met Department issued heavy to very heavy rainfall warning to north coastal Andhra Pradesh, coastal Odisha and coastal Gangetic West Bengal with isolated extremely heavy falls under the influence of the system coupled with gusty winds speeds reaching 90-100 kmph. Fishermen are advised not to venture into sea as the condition along and off north Andhra, Odisha and West Bengal coasts are very likely to be high to very high. North coastal Andhra districts of Visakhapatnam, Vizianagaram and Srikakulam experienced intermittent rains since yesterday under the influence of the cyclonic system. Though the wet spell continued the intensity and frequency of rain decreased along with the wind. <br/><br/>However, the district administrations are fully geared up to extend all help to see that people staying in low-lying areas are shifted to safer places in case of any eventuality with rescue and relief operations, as flooding is likely to occur with catchment areas in Andhra and neighbouring Odisha regions receiving heavy showers.
