Cyclone Phyan by-passes Mumbai ; loses intensity

The cyclone Phyan has bypassed Mumbai and is said to be losing its intensity. Mumbai and its neigbouring areas are still on alert until the cyclone weakens further. The cyclone is expected to pass about 100 km from the Mumbai city between Alibaug in Raigad district.<br/>The Met office has advised the Konkan region to be on alert for the next 12 hours. High winds and heavy rains are forecast for the city. Fishermen are still advised to refrain from venturing into the seas for the next 12 hours.<br/><br/>Meanwhile, the cyclone alert in Gujarat has been lowered to a warning and will be removed once the cyclone weakens further. According to the MET department, although the cyclone is said to be fizzling out ,the coastline will remain on alert until further weakening in the cyclonic weather conditions. Reports say about 400 fishermen who had ventured into the sea in about 60 boats are stranded in the sea off Daman coast in South Gujarat. They had left the shore two days ago.<br/>Mumbai Municipal Corporation, issued an advisory for the closure of schools, colleges and city offices earlier today. The downpour meanwhile continues in Mumbai and the city is expected to witness heavy rain with a 'cyclone alert' sounded for South Gujarat and North Maharashtra coast.<br/><br/>The Meteorological Department has said that Mumbai and surrounding areas will face rough weather. The deep depression is likely to intensify further into a cyclonic storm and make a landfall between Mahua in south Gujarat and Dahanu in north Maharashtra. Squally winds with speed reaching 90 kmph, are likely to commence along and off south Gujarat and Kerala coasts besides Lakshadweep, while it will hit Kerala, Karnataka and Maharashtra coasts during the next 48 hours.
