Cyclone Phailin: Restoration work begins in Odisha, AP

Steps to restore snapped communication lines, power transmission and rebuild damaged infrastructure in coastal belt of Odisha and Andhra Pradesh have started on Sunday with the subsiding of Cyclone Phailin.

Official sources said in New Delhi that Dr Prime Minister Manmohan Singh is personally monitoring the situation. Dr Singh directed central agencies to extend full support to the state governments in restoring normalcy in the aftermath of the cyclone.

Meanwhile, Cabinet Secretary Ajith Seth on Sunday chaired a meeting of the Crisis Management Group to assess the damage and coordinate rescue and relief efforts.

Officials from National Thermal Power Corporation and National Hydroelectric Power Corporation are helping the state governments in restoring power supply.

The Sources added that efforts are on to restore the overhead electricity networks of the railways. Meanwhile the East Coast Railway restored train services between Howrah and Puri on Sunday.

The East Coast Railway spokesperson said that the services between Khurda Road station and Palsa remain suspended as the restoration work on the track is still continuing.
