Cyclone Mick causes widespread power blackout in Fiji

Cyclone Mick swept over Fiji today causing widespread power blackouts over the main island of Viti Levu, bringing torrential rain and gale force winds. There were no early reports of casualties as the category two Cyclone Mick swept over the country. Tourists in the Yasawa and Mamanuca islands off the north-west of Viti Levu were reported to be safe, although some villagers had to flee their homes after their roofs were blown off. Those living in low-lying areas have been urged to move to higher ground. Flights from Fiji's international airport at Nadi on the west coast of Viti Levu were disrupted as the cyclone passed. The cyclone was moving south-east at 20 kilometers per hour and has been upgraded from category one. Meteorological service director Rajendra Prasad said cyclone was expected to pass over the rest of the island during the evening.
