Cyber crime: CBI planning to open special branch in Mumbai

The Central Bureau of Investigation is planning to open a Cyber Crime Investigation Branch in Mumbai and is working on the infrastructure and necessary facilities with Maharashtra Government and the State Police. Speaking to reporters after inaugurating the new CBI Building in Mumbai today, CBI Director Anil Sinha said that Mumbai being the commercial and financial capital of India was an appropriate place to have a cyber investigation facility. Till date, CBI's only cyber branch works from its headquarters in Delhi. Stating that economic offences and cyber crimes have been on a rise in the last two years, Mr. Sinha said that it's time another branch is opened in Mumbai with a separate team of officers and experts.

Although CBI started as an Anti-Corruption Agency, its scope has increased over the last few decades. Mr. Sinha said bureau has now assumed the role of a federal investigative agency which can investigate most of the offences that affect public life.

Earlier, CBI Director Anil Sinha had said that corruption flourishes due to opportunities, social acceptance and freedom from risks. Calling for a three fold action to reduce corruption, Mr. Sinha said strict vigilance must reduce these opportunities; citizens must be intolerant of corruption and inform the agencies about the same while CBI and the State Anti-Corruption Bureaus must effectively detect and prosecute the corrupt to instill fear of law in them.

Talking about the new 13-storey CBI building at Bandra Kurla Complex, Mr. Sinha said that the new office will not only provide CBI officials with a conducive ambiance but also encourage them to achieve higher efficiency.
