CWG: Weightlifters & shooters bag 5 medals for India; Lifter Satish Sivalingam wins country's 6th Gold

In the Glasgow Commonwealth Games, Weightlifters and Shooters again shone for India yesterday as the 2010 hosts finished day 4 of the events with a total tally of 22 medals — 6 Gold, 9 Silver and 7 Bronze. Lifter Sathish Kumar Sivalingam bagged India's only Gold of the day, with compatriot Ravi Kumar Katulu clinching a Silver and Punam Yadav claiming a Bronze, also in Weightlifting. India continued to reign supreme in Shooting, as Shreyasi Singh won a Silver and Asab Mohd. took a Bronze in their Double Trap events. When it looked like this would be the first no-Gold day for India, Sathish Kumar Sivalingam came up with an impeccable performance to hand us our 6th Gold of the Glasgow Games. In the 77kg division, he lifted a total of 328 kgs, a Commonwealth record, to finish at the top of the podium.Ravi Kumar Katulu was no less brilliant as he recorded a total lift of 317 kgs, to take home the Silver.Earlier, Punam Yadav, in the 63 kg category, bagged India's first medal of the day in Weightlifting. She lifted a total of 202 kgs to clinch the Bronze medal.In Shooting, Shreyasi Singh just missed the Gold, as she lost the Women's Double Trap final to England's Charlotte Kerwood by only 2 points.The Men's Double Trap event saw Asab Mohd. beat Nathan Xuereb of Malta, 26-24 to win the Bronze.In Athletics, Narayana Sharadha and Poovamma M. made it to the Women's 100 metre and 400 metre semi-finals, with Om Prakash Karhana booking a place in the Shot Put Finals.Pugilists Manoj Kumar and Sumit Sangwan advanced to their respective quarterfinals.The Indian Women's Hockey team lost it's second preliminary round game to New Zealand, 0-3.In Squash, Saurav Ghosal crashed out after losing to James Willstrop of England, 0-3 in the semi-finals. However, Anaka Alankmony progressed to the Women's Plate finals.As the day ended, Australia finished at the top of the medals tally, with England second, Scotland third, Canada fourth, and India at the fifth position.
