CWG village set for official opening on tomorrow

As the Commonwealth Games village in New Delhi is all set for official opening tomorrow, work is on at break-neck speed at the village to clean up the 1168 flats built to accommodate athletes and delegates.Commonwealth Games Federation President Mike Fennel, who had earlier given 24 hour ultimatum to clean up the village, is coming to New Delhi tomorrow. All the venues will be sealed for security starting from tonight. Delhites may have to shell out 2000 rupees fine for any violation of the restricted lanes on the city roads marked blue for Commonwealth Games. The restrictions will come in to force from tomorrow to help the athletes and officials to reach Games venues without any hurdles.Earlier in the day, part of the false ceiling of the weightlifting venue for the Commonwealth Games collapsed. Delhi Chief Minister Sheila Dixit said some minor glitches do come but that are not insurmountable.Cabinet Secretary K.M. Chandrasekhar who visited the Games village said everything will be ready on time and there is nothing to fear. Yesterday in a high level meeting, Home Secretary G.K. Pillai took stock of the Games security and crowd controlling measures. A four-tier security apparatus is being put in place during the Games.Nearly one lakh security personnel will be deployed in the capital for the next one month including central paramilitary personnel. Our correspondent reports that the authorities have left no stone unturned to make the flats built in 84 towers livable and hygienic. Never before the Municipal Corporation of Delhi worked with this kind of break neck speed. After battered with criticsm from every one, the MCD got its action together to clean up the Common Wealth Games village in a record time of 24 hours, the ultimatum set by Mike Fennel. Had it done its job earlier, Delhi would not have had to face this emabarrasment. Going by better late than never, it fielded a huge contingent of work force today to spruce up the 1168 flats and the games village to welcome the athletes from across the world . 10 lakh flower pots have been placed all over Delhi to make it look the best ever green games. May be once the Games are over successfully, all may forget the agonising lapses.
