CWG: Punia sisters to vie for Gold in Discus final

At the Glasgow Commonwealth Games, five Indian pugilists will play their semi-final bouts today, looking to assure India of several medals in Boxing. Vijender Singh in 75 kg, Devendro Laishram in 49 kg, Manpreet Jangra in 69 kg, Laishram Devi in the 57 to 60 kg and Pinki Rani in the 48 to 51 kg category will be seen in action. In Athletics, Krishna Poonia and Seema Punia will be vying for top honours in the Women's Discus Throw Final today. G. Nagaraj will try her luck in the Women's High Jump Final. Ravinder Singh Khaira, Davinder Singh and Vipin Kasana will be featuring in the Javelin Throw qualification, while Arpinder Singh will be seen in action in the qualification of Triple Jump. Discus Thrower Vikas Gowda, yesterday, gave India its first Athletics Gold of the Glasgow Games. In Gymnastics, Ashish Kumar will slug it out in the Men's Vault Finals. Dipa Karmakar bagged the Bronze in the Women's Vault yesterday to become the first Indian woman gymnast to win a Commonwealth Games medal. In Badminton, five Indian shuttlers PV Sindhu, P. Kashyap, Srikanth K., RMV Gurusaidutt and PC Thulasi will play for semi-final berths today. The duo of Jwala Gutta and Ashwini Ponnappa will also play in the quarterfinals. In Squash, Dipika Pallikal and Joshana Chinappa will play in the Women's Doubles semi-finals today, with the pairs of Joshana and Harinder Sandhu, and Dipika and Saurav Ghosal battling it out in the Mixed Doubles quarterfinals. In Table Tennis, Soumyajit Ghosh, Achanta Sharath Kamal and Harmeet Desai will sweat it out in the Singles third round. India will also figure in the Men's Doubles semi-finals and the Women's Doubles third round. In Hockey, the Indian Women's team will take on hosts Scotland in the 5th-6th position match. The Women's Hockey semi-finals will also be played today. In the first semi-final, Australia will take on South Africa, while in the second semi-final, New Zealand will meet England. All India Radio will broadcast live commentary on both the semi-finals. It can be heard from 4:40 and 6:55 PM onwards. England is, currently, at the top of the medals tally, with Australia second, Canada third and Scotland fourth. With 13 Gold, 20 Silver and 14 Bronze, India is at the fifth spot.
