CWG: Heena Sidhu bags India's 11th Gold

At the 21st Commonwealth Games today, the Indian competitors slowed down a bit after five days of Gold rush.

The lone Gold of the day was won by pistol shooter Heena Sidhu. The 28-year old finished on top in the women's 25-metre pistol event.

Heena also notched up a new Games record of 38 points in the final to take the title in style.

This was Heena Sidhu's second medal at the ongoing Games after having claimed a silver in the 10-metre air pistol event behind 16-year-old compatriot Manu Bhaker.

The other medal of the day was a Bronze which was won by para-powerlifter Sachin Chaudhary in the men's heavyweight final.

In a 10-man final, Chaudhary finished with a combined effort of 181 kg at the Carrara Sports Arena. It was India's first medal in Para-sports at the Commonwealth Games.

It was a brilliant day for the boxers at the Oxenford Studios, where all five in action assured themselves of medals by advancing to the semi-finals. Among them was veteran Manoj Kumar (69kg).

Joining him were a bunch of debutants — Amit Panghal (49kg), Mohammed Hussamuddin (56kg), the 19-year-old Naman Tanwar (91kg) and former Asian Games bronze-medallist Satish Kumar (91kg).

The boxers have, so far, guaranteed themselves six medals in all as, among the women, MC Mary Kom (48kg) is also through to the semifinals.

In Hockey, the Indian men and women teams entered the semi-finals. In men's section, India defeated Malaysia 2-1. In the women's match, India overcame South Africa by one-nil in Pool A.

There were some strong performances in the track and field events as well with Muhammad Anas Yahiya improving his personal best and breaking the national record for a third time to finish a creditable fourth in the men's 400 metres final.

In the women's 400-metre women's semifinals, the 18-year-old Hima qualified for the final with a personal best of 51.53 seconds.

Medal hopes will once again hinge on shooters tomorrow when Jitu Rai takes aim in the 50-metre pistol event, having already claimed the 10-metre gold.

Boxing star Mary Kom would be aiming to enter the finals, while star shuttler Saina Nehwal and P V Sindhu will begin their quest for individual medals after the mixed team gold.
