CWG 2014: On fifth day, India clinches 1 Gold & 3 Silver medals

On the fifth day of the Commonwealth Games at Glasgow, yesterday, Indian shooters continued their heroics, winning one Gold and two Silver medals. The third Silver came in the men's 85 kg Weightlifting event. 'Pistol King' Jitu Rai kept his reputation intact by clinching the gold in the men's 50 metre pistol event. 26-year old Rai, who earlier in the day, had put an incredible display of accuracy and consistency as he topped qualification with a Games record of 562, set a new finals record of 194.1 to bag his first Commonwealth Games gold on debut. Gurpal Singh also took the spotlight with his silver-winning effort in the same event. Gagan Narang won the Silver medal in Men's 50 metre Rifle Prone. Later in the day, young Vikas Thakur produced the lift of his life to bag the third silver for the country.In boxing, star Indian boxer Vijender Singh (75kg) continued his sublime form to enter the quarterfinals along with gritty youngster L Devendro Singh (49kg). Mandeep Jhangra, also, advanced to the last eight stage. But Shiva Thapa (56kg), went down to Olympic bronze-medallist Michael Conlan of Northern Ireland. In Women's hockey, the Indian team outplayed Trinidad and Tobago by a whopping 14-0 margin in their third match of the Games. Hammer thrower Narayan Singh Chandrodaya was the only Indian to qualify for the final round in a disappointing outing for the Indians on the second day of the athletics meet. With a haul of 7 Gold, 12 Silver and 7 Bronze,, India now occupies the seventh spot in the medal standings. Australia top the table followed by England and Hosts Scotland in that order.
