The Congress Working Committee (CWC) has expressed full faith in the leadership of Sonia Gandhi and Rahul Gandhi and rejected resignations offered by them for the debacle of the party in the Lok Sabha elections.

In its meeting in New Delhi on Monday evening, the CWC unanimously passed a resolution saying that resignations are not the solution but there is a need to deal with the current challenges ahead the party. Briefing reporters after the meeting, party General Secretary Janardan Dwivedi said, the CWC accepted the verdict of the people and authorized the party chief to take all necessary steps to revamp the Congress. He said, in the meeting, Sonia Gandhi alleged that the way rivals polarized the elections is worrisome. Dwivedi said the outgoing Prime Minister Manmohan Singh took responsibility for the shortcomings of the UPA government to deal with issues like price rise and corruption.

In the meeting, Rahul Gandhi said, the lack of accountability in the party lead the party's dismal performance in the General elections. The Congress witnessed its worst-ever defeat securing just 44 seats in the 543-member Lok Sabha in the recently held elections. The meeting chaired by party President Sonia Gandhi was also attended by P Chidambaram, A K Antony, Sushil Kumar Shinde Digvijay Singh, C P Joshi, Moti Lal Vora, Ajay Maken and Oscar Fernandes.
