CW Games Probe: CAG says, it will submit its audit report in three months

After the Central Vigilance Commissioner widened the ambit of its probe into the alleged financial and administrative irregularities related to the Commonwealth Games, the CAG says, it will submit its audit report to the government in three months. Comptroller and Auditor General Mr. Vinod Rai told AIR that delay in the probe will erode its credibility. He asserted that the audit will cover all aspects and all institutions involved in the delivery of the games. The CAG said that the government auditors will probe 24 departments, 15 of them belong to Delhi government and four to the organising committee. He said, about 100 CAG staffers are involved in the probe which are looking into the working and purchase of agencies related to CWG.In a related move, the central vigilance commission has brought purchase of medical equipment and selection of tainted project officers for the sporting event under its scanner. The CVC is probing at least 22 more Games-related construction and procurement works carried out by different government agencies here for alleged financial irregularities. Out of these projects, six were carried out by Ministry of Youth Affairs and Sports, four by Delhi Development Authority, three by Organising Committee and two each by Municipal Corporation of Delhi, Central Public Works Department, Government of Delhi. A senior CVC official said that based on their replies, the CVC will give its findings or final report to a committee formed by Prime Minister Manmohan Singh headed by former Comptroller and Auditor General (CAG) V K Shunglu. Meanwhile, Delhi Government has asked all its departments to keep relevant documents ready and fully cooperate with investigators. The Chief Minister Mrs. Shiela Dikshit, who chaired a high-level meeting, said records of all expenditure incurred as part of the preparations will be ready so that they can be made available to any probe agency wanting to scrutinise them. The anti-corruption watchdog is also investigating procurement of secure communication network or Tetra for the Games on the basis of complaint received from Dr Harsh Vardhan, Member of Legislative Assembly, Delhi. It is also looking into the complaint regarding alleged irregularities in awarding contracts for PA/Sound System, LED display boards and other communication systems for various Commonwealth Games stadia in which national exchequer borne loss of crores of rupees.Meanwhile, a meeting of the Group of Ministers, GoM, on the Commonwealth Games is now on in New Delhi. The GOM headed by the Urban Development Minister Jaipal Reddy is likely to focus on how the Organising Committee spent 1,600 crore rupees released by the Centre and other related issues.
