Curfew relaxed in Golaghat district of Assam; no untoward incident reported

In Assam, the situation in violence-hit Golaghat district is limping back to normal. Additional DGP, Law and Order, A P Rout said that the curfew has been relaxed from 6 am to 12 noon today. He said that long distance vehicles are plying on the roads. Rout said the , administration will review the situation later and relaxation may be extended. Earlier Curfew was relaxed last evening from 5.30 PM to 9 PM.Curfew was clamped on Wednesday in Golaghat when an irate mob tried to attack policemen at Golaghat town. Three persons had died and several injured in the clash with the police. Rout said, no untoward incident has been reported in the district since the last 24 hours. He said that two additional companies of security forces have been deployed at the Assam-Nagaland border disturbed area, and another five are being deployed.
Meanwhile, Several organisations have decided to withdraw their indefinite strike in Golaghat after they held talks with the district administration. The representatives of the protesting organisations are likely to meet Chief Minister Tarun Gogoi in Guwahati today to discuss the prevailing law and order situation. In the meantime, the Assam and Nagaland governments have mutually agreed to resolve the border dispute amicably. In a meeting held between Assam and Nagaland Chief Ministers in Guwahati yesterday, both states decided to form a joint mechanism to work out a solution to the border problem. Union Minister of State for Home Affairs, Kiren Rijiju said that the Centre would extend all possible help and support to both states to contain the situation.It may be recalled that miscreants from Nagaland killed 9 civilians and torched down houses at Uriamghat in Golaghat district recently in a land dispute following which thousands of villagers of Assam have taken shelter at relief camps.
