Curfew re-imposed in Assam’s Chirang district following fresh violence

In Assam, district administration re imposed indefinite curfew in Chirang district this afternoon as a precautionary measure after mob attacked public bus on National Highway number 31 C. State Home department sources in Guwahati said that people blocked the National Highway at Bartola under Dhaligaon Police Station to know the whereabouts of the two missing persons. They went missing from Barpathar in Bongaigaon last night whose bodies were recovered today from Baasangaon under Karigaon Police out Post in Kokrajhar district. Three people including a driver of a public bus were injured in stone pelting. District administration immediately deployed security forces on the spot. Security forces resorted to blank firing to control the situation. Meanwhile, two more bodies were recovered at Barlaogaon under Bijni Police Station in Chirang district. With this, the total death toll has mounted to 60. Night curfew continues in Kokrajhar and Dhubri districts. Unidentified miscreants torched a few houses in Kokrajhar district last night. Security forces have intensified patrolling in the violence hit areas. A team of National Human Rights Commission will visit the violence -marred areas tomorrow to take stock of relief and rehabilitation works.

Assam police has arrested seven people for stone pelting. State Law and Order IGP said that the situation in Chirang and other areas is under control.
