In Assam, the day curfew has been lifted from 6.00 a.m. to 6.00 p.m. in four police station areas of Goalpara district following improvement of overall law and order situation. No fresh incident was reported from anywhere in the area since last 36 hours. Four police station areas of the district comprising Krishnai, Dudhnoi, Dhupdhora and Rongjuli were brought under indefinite curfew following large-scale group clashes in the tribal-dominated villages along the Meghalaya-Assam inter-state boundary. According to official sources, both the states have decided to set up a joint control room at Mendipathar in East Garo hill district to stop recurrence of further violence. Army has been deployed in the violence-affected areas. Besides, ten companies of additional paramilitary forces have been rushed to the area by the Centre for maintenance of law and order situation. As many as nine persons were killed and over 120 wounded in the week-long ethnic violence in the area. About 34,000 people, including 18,000 from Meghalaya were displaced due to the clashes and they are taking shelter in relief camps in Goalpara on the Assam side of the inter-State border. Meanwhile, the Joint Secretary in charge of the North-East in the Union Home Ministry Mr. Shambhu Singh yesterday visited the violence affected areas along Assam-Meghalaya boundary. He reviewed the situation with top district officials of both the states at Mendipathar in East Garo Hills. The official also met representatives of the warring Garo and Rava communities and went to the relief camps for on-the-spot study of the situation. The Home Joint Secretary is meeting the Assam Chief Secretary Naba Kumar Das at Dispur today to work out plan to bring peace and confidence among the locals in the bordering areas of both the states.
