In Meghalaya, Curfew has been extended to other areas in Resubelpara sub-division in the wake of escalation of ethnic clashes between Garo and Rabha tribals along the Meghalaya-Assam border. The army has been called in to assist police and paramilitary in the East Garo Hills district. Border Security Force and the Central Reserve Police Force are also assisting police in enforcing the curfew in Mendiapathar and its adjoining areas. Chief Minister Mukul Sangma is in constant touch with Home Minister P. Chidambaram and Assam Chief Minister Tarun Gogoi in the wake of the communal flare up. The Chief Minister also discussed with Union Minister of Defence A K Anthony the option of deployment of Army personnel in the conflict zone. Meghalaya Governor R.S. Mooshahary appealed to both the tribes to stop the violence. Union Minister of State for Rural Development Agatha K. Sangma, a local MP from Tura and former Lok Sabha speaker P.A. Sangma had also rushed to the area to take stock of the situation. Home Minister HDR Lyngdoh is also visiting the disturbed areas today. Curfew was clamped in Mendipathar and its adjoining areas under Resubelpara sub-division of the district on Monday night after clashes between tribal Garos and Rabhas were reported.
