Curfew across Kashmir remain in force on 11th consecutive day today

In Jammu & Kashmir, the curfew and restrictions across Kashmir remain in force on the 11th consecutive day today in view of continuing shutdown call by separatists and overall prevailing law and order disturbances. The normal life remains completely paralysed across Kashmir.Police and para military personnel across Kashmir have been deployed in strength to maintain law and order.<br/><br/>Chief Minister Mehbooba Mufti has convened an All Party Meeting (APM) in Srinagar on Thursday to discuss the prevailing situation in Kashmir. The invitation has been extended to all mainstream political parties. The shutdown is being observed since July 09 after spontaneous protests and violence broke out following the killing of militant commander Burhan Wani (and his two associates on 8th of this month) in Kokernag area of south Kashmir.<br/><br/>Barring BSNL post paid landline, mobile and broadband internet services, all private mobile telephone services continue to remain suspended. The local newspapers could not hit the stands on 4th consecutive day after editors and publishers alleged ban by the government on the publication of newspapers. They alleged their printed copies, master copies and other printing material was seized during Friday Saturday midnight. Political advisor to CM Prof Amitabh Mattoo said there was no ban on newspapers and there was some miscommunication.<br/><br/>Separatist leaders have jointly extended the shutdown call till July 22nd. In view of the prevailing situation, the Government has extended the summer vacations in schools and colleges and will reopen on July 25. Kashmir University also postponed all examinations and suspended class work till July 23rd. Till yesterday evening, 1,79,530 pilgrims had darshan of ice lingam at the Holy Amarnath Cave.<br/><br/>Another woman succumbed in Srinagar hospital who was critically injured late yesterday evening in Qazigund area of south Kashmir's Anantnag when Army retaliated by opening fire on the stone pelting crowd. Two civilians including 55 year woman were killed in the incident. With this death, the casualty toll of civilians including three women, has reached 41. <br/><br/>However, local newspapers put the civilian deaths on higher side (47). A police spokesman in a statement said an Army mobile patrol party while removing obstructions on road at Churhat Qazigund, came under heavy stone pelting by people. Police said some among crowd tried to snatch weapons and the Army personnel fired in self defence. <br/><br/>Meanwhile, SSP National Highway Sanjay Kotwal told AIR that a convoy of Amarnath yatris that left Jammu Base Camp yesterday, has been halted at Shaitani Nallah point, two Kms from Jawahar Tunnel and at Ramban on Jammu Srinagar Highway. He said there is law and order issue in Qazigund area following yesterday's civilian killings. Kotwal said all Yatris are safe.
