As part of the electoral reforms, the Law Ministry will move a Cabinet note seeking to bar persons facing serious criminal charges from contesting elections. This was disclosed by Law Minister Salman Khurshid in New Delhi on Friday.
In an interview to the Rajya Sabha TV, he said the proposed legislation would seek amendments to the Representation of People's Act. Khurshid said it also addressed some important issues, such as proxy voting, financing of elections as well as financing of political parties.
The draft Cabinet note was prepared by the Ministry when M Veerappa Moily was Law Minister.
