Criminal Law (Amendment) Bill, 2013 likely to be tabled in Parliament tomorrow

The government is likely to introduce the Criminal Law (Amendment) Bill, 2013, in Parliament tomorrow. Two rounds of an all-party meeting to iron out differences expressed by some political parties on some of the contentious issues of bill were held on Monday.

Law Minister Ashwani Kumar told a private channel that the government will incorporate suggestions by the Opposition and all major parties before tabling it on the floor of the House.

BJP, SP and other parties demanded that the age of consent for sex be 18 years and not 16 as envisaged in the Ordinance. They contended that since the age of marriage is 18 years, the age of consent should be the same.

Most parties were of the view that the clauses about stalking and voyuerism be tweaked further to prevent misuse.

Talking to reporters after the meeting, Parliamentary Affairs Minister Kamal Nath said largely there was consensus on the intent and the content of the Bill, except that there are concerns about misuse and abuse of some of its provisions.

He said the government is ready to bring necessary official amendments in the Bill and ensure its smooth passage.
