Crime and Criminal Tracking Network and Systems to be operationalised by March 2017

Days after terror attacks in Paris, the government today gave its nod for the time-bound completion of a project to synchronise databases of security organisations across the country by integrating key components of the criminal justice system. <br/><br/>The Cabinet Committee on Economic Affairs gave its approval for completion of the Crime and Criminal Tracking Network and Systems (CCTNS) by March 2017. <br/><br/>Briefing reporters after the meeting, Minister of State in Prime Minister's Office Dr. Jitendra Singh said after the Paris attack, India has resolved to join the world community in a crusade against terror and decided to fast track the CCTNS. <br/><br/>To keep pace with changing scenario, the Cabinet also decided to approve in principle design of next phase of CCTNS project so that additional functionalities may be included and police functioning in the country is fully computerized. <br/><br/>Government has also decided to implement Integrated Criminal Justice System (ICJS) by integrating CCTNS with e-Courts, e-prisons, Forensics and Prosecution – the key<br/>components of the criminal justice system.<br/><br/>CCTNS project will interconnect about 15,000 police stations and additional 5,000 offices of supervisory police officers across the country and digitize data related to FIR<br/>registration, investigation and charge sheets in all police stations.<br/><br/>This would lead to development of a national database of crimes and criminals.
